Course Level: Intermediate to Advanced This course teaches the fundamental elements of wellsite and operations geology. First, a review will be made of the background to and some of the basics of these related disciplines. The course will then detail each of the main duties and responsibilities of operations and wellsite geology. These will include choosing and the quality control of the geological contractors, the ever increasing task of data management, formation pore pressure evaluation and well planning. There will also be detailed reviews of the more traditional tasks of sample and show description as well as coring and sidewall coring. All these will be presented with the support of practicals and 30 years experience of the instructor.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
• Review of fundamental concepts
• What the roles of wellsite and operations geologists are
• The importance of good communication
• How to manage wellsite derived data effectively
• Who are the main geological contractors and what they should do
• How to choose and quality control the geological contractors
• How to evaluate formation pore pressures using wellsite derived data
• How to pick core and sidewall core points and how to process them effectively
• How to effectively plan the geological aspects of a well including well and data acquisition programmes
• The basics of geosteering
• How to ensure good, consistent cuttings and show descriptions
• Wellsite log and report preparation
• How to handle final well documentation
OUTLINE
• Review of some fundamental concepts
• Health Safety and Environment (HSE)
• Operations and wellsite geology roles and responsibilities
• Well data management
• Geological contracts, contractor evaluation and quality control,
• Sample and show description
• The basics of formation pore, fracture and overburden pressures
• Formation pressure evaluation techniques at the wellsite
• HTHP wells from a geological perspective
• Coring programs and core point picking
• Fundamentals of well planning
• Logs, reports and final well documentation
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The course is designed for personnel familiar with the basics of hydrocarbon exploration who want to advance into wellsite and operations geology. The course will also give oil company new hires valuable insight into the process of wellsite data acquisition, the value of the data and also its limitations. The usefulness of these data in regional studies and well planning is also stressed. The course assumes a basic knowledge of rigs, rig equipment, drilling activities and the personnel involved in these activities.
