Course Level: Intermediate Most explorationists view seismic data on a workstation to see the geology. Many, however, never have the opportunity to see the acquisition process ‘in the field’.
The objective of this course is to provide an insight into the decision-making processes with regards to in the planning, testing and acquisition of a seismic survey. The course is intended to provide the participant with sufficient exposure to the practical and financial aspects of a seismic survey operation to permit confident project supervision.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
Upon completion, participants should have a better understanding of the acquisition process and its pitfalls. They should be able to plan a seismic survey, improve contract negotiations and critically oversee an acquisition operation during visits to a seismic crew.
OUTLINE
This is a combined lecture and workshop course. It includes elements of survey planning, design and quality control.
- Revision of basic principles
- Definition of survey objectives
- Geological considerations of programme design
- Practical constraints and pre-survey planning
- Budgetary and contractual considerations
- Positioning, navigation and surveying techniques
- Common depth point configurations and fold of stack
- Marine, shallow-marine and ocean bottom operations
- Land operations: desert, tundra, jungle and mountain
- Transition zone operations and techniques
- High resolution and rig site survey techniques
- Weathering layer assessment and methods
- Operational hazards, safety and logistics
- Principles of data sampling and recording
- Source and receiver characteristics and operation
- Noise analysis and optimal array designs
- Supporting data, media and reporting
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The course is aimed at geologists and geophysicists who are primarily officebased and mainly involved in interpretation and management duties. A basic knowledge of seismic principles and acquisition techniques is assumed.
