Description

This course addresses the broad topic of history matching, which entails the calibration of numerical flow simulation models to measured field data. It presents modern history matching approaches, focusing on the latest developments in the field, with special emphasis given to modifying geological parameters while maintaining geological consistency.

History matching is presented within the larger context of uncertainty quantification, whose ultimate goal is to improve the reliability of forecasts and other design application numerical models.

Course Level: Advanced
Instructor: Marco Thiele

Designed for you, if you are...

  • A reservoir engineer or geoscientist interested in gaining a perspective on modern history matching techniques, particularly related to retaining geo-consistency as well as using a more modern data integration approach
  • Familiar with reservoir simulation and geological model building, as well as reservoir engineering concepts

How we build your confidence

  • Essential concepts are illustrated via hands-on computer exercises
  • Review of reservoir simulation and static reservoir model building concepts in the context of reservoir model uncertainty
  • A general, but rigorous approach to history matching, with an eye towards the end goal of uncertainty quantification
  • Novel methods to identify and quantify human bias and modelling errors are introduced
  • The key role of sensitivity analysis in identifying influential model parameters is described
  • Modern assisted history matching methods such as data integration, data assimilation and optimization are discussed in depth
  • Best practices and common pitfalls in history matching are presented
  • History matching methods in currently available commercial software are reviewed
  • An overview of the latest research in history matching

The benefits from attending

By the end of the course you will feel confident in your knowledge of:

  • Best practices in history matching
