Machine Learning – A HOT Topic

Our Senior Reservoir Engineer and Machine Learning mastermind Dr. Latif Yalcinoglu held a poster presentation titled ‘Can machines learn to pick first breaks as humans do?’ at the first EAGE/PESGB workshop on Machine Learning in Europe, 29-30 November 2018 in London, UK.

Latif concludes that using a supervised machine learning algorithm for first break picking achieves high detection accuracy and consequently increases the quality of static correction models while simultaneously saving considerable time and money for manual picking.

HOT’s Latest Successful Project Featured in EAGE’s First Break Journal

In this month’s issue of EAGE’s First Break journal, our Principal Geophysicist, Dr. Christian Stotter and Senior Geoscientist Robert Rieger report on one of HOT’s latest successful projects on a giant oilfield in Libya.

The paper ‘Is it worth the effort? — why state-of-the art reprocessing of old seismic data was an indispensable tool for a reservoir simulation study in the Murzuq Basin (Libya)’ shows how with modern processing even old seismic data can be successfully used to answer urgent questions about reservoir management and field development.  Using the re-processed dataset (and integrating it with other disciplines) we were able to generate a geo-model, which was already “history matched”.

Therefore, in case you have old data, which you consider not worth re-processing, give it a try, technology has made great progress!

ADNOC Offshore Presented One of HOT’s Advanced Technologies at ADIPEC

Hiroshi Uematsu, Senior Reservoir Engineer with ADNOC Offshore, demonstrated how to arrive within a short time at a high quality history match for a large Middle Eastern carbonate oil reservoir with long production history and numerous wells.

By applying SenEx, HOT’s advanced assisted history matching tool, ADNOC Offshore was able to achieve a technical sound well-by-well history match with less than 20 (!) simulation runs ONLY!

What usually takes months, has been achieved in a few days.
Another proof of the outstanding performance of SenEx.

Petroleum Economics, Business and Decision Making (PBM02)
3-6 December 2018 (5 days) – CONFIRMED!
** Last-Minute Spots available! **

Engineers, geoscientists and economists perform technical work to support the “business” objectives of the organisation they work for (corporation, government). It is therefore important that they understand that “business” because it will influence the judgements they make. Economic evaluations provide the main source of the organisation’s information by which investment and operational decisions are made regarding the most effective use of resources. It is through these decisions corporate value is being created (or destroyed). Read more…
