Underground Gas Storage

Over the past 30 years, we have supported our customers in converting gas and oil reservoirs into underground gas storage (UGS) facilities and have advised them in extending the capacity of their UGS operations to cope with the increasing, yet fluctuating, seasonal energy demand.

Our extensive subsurface expertise and experience comprising geophysical, geological, geomechanical, petrophysical, reservoir engineering and production technology disciplines have made us the preferred partner and trusted advisor for gas storage companies all over Central Europe and beyond, among these Europe’s leading storage facility operators.

We are also initiator and founding member of  UEST, a centre of excellence for underground energy storage technologies.

Gas types

What we can do for you:

1.
Identify reservoirs and aquifers suitable for conversion to
underground gas storage (UGS) facilities

2.
Determine data acquisition requirements and
design data acquisition campaigns

3.
Determine caprock and sealing capacity

4.
Perform lab experiments, tests and analyses

5.
Describe, characterise, model and history match the
reservoirs planned for conversion to UGS

6.
Determine the capacity, working gas, injection and
production profiles of gas storage operations

7.
Assess cushion gas requirements

8.
Determine optimum UGS build-up scenarios

9.
Determine optimum UGS operations with respect to
potential aquifer water influx

10.
Determine locations, trajectories and
completion of gas storage wells

11.
Assess the subsurface risk of UGS operations
and how to mitigate

12.
Develop reservoir monitoring strategies
and management

“The HOT Energy Group has substantially assisted RAG in planning almost all of our underground gas storage (UGS) facilities. The quality of their subsurface models has proved outstanding and has helped us to develop more than 50% of our gas fields into successful UGS operations and to become one of Europe’s leading gas storage operators.”
